New Awakenings

I was recently given the task of connecting one of our websites to Google Console. As I logged into the dashboard, I tried to ignore the many redundant properties there, mainly years of accumulated, abandoned projects. But one caught my eye. I couldn’t remember ever having a blog with that name.

Curiosity won. I clicked it open and found a single post written 15 years ago. It was a reflection on the Recession. The words felt a little alien, as if written by someone else, yet the sentiments resonated deeply with my truth today.

I wrote that piece during my time as a postgraduate student at Dublin City University. Austere times, those were - the world tightening its belt, dreams put on pause, hence my choice to go back into full time study. And here I am again, walking through another kind of wilderness, this time not borne out of  scarcity, but of renewal, as I build a newish business from the ground up.

Do I think I should have stuck with my events management business back then instead of returning to paid employment? Absolutely. Nothing compares to building into your own economy, creating value on your own terms, and being the master of your own destiny.

Of course, self-employment comes with its own battles. My team looks forward to payday at the end of the month, while I often dread it. When you’re an employee, payday feels like a reward; when you’re the employer, it’s a reminder of responsibility. And yes, I sometimes miss the steady income, the comfort, the predictable rhythm of corporate life.

But what I have now far outweighs those comforts. I’ve traded security for freedom, and I’d make that trade again, every single time. I am free.

Free to dream.
Free to build.
Free to create.

Free to make a difference where it truly matters.

I AM FREE!
